5 common mistakes you need to avoid when applying mousse

You've bought mousse. You're determined to avoid punk. But... this is also where things can go wrong.

Installing mousse correctly is crucial – not just to get it into the tire, but to ensure it lasts a long time, performs at peak performance and doesn’t wear out prematurely. In this guide, we’ll go over the 5 most common mistakes we see – and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: You skip the gel (or skimp on it)

The silicone gel is not a bonus. It is a necessity.

Without gel, friction occurs between the mousse and the inside of the tire. This leads to:

  • Shortened lifespan

  • Overheating

  • Uneven performance

Solution: Always use the included brush and apply plenty of silicone around the entire mousse before assembly.

Mistake 2: You're using the wrong tire size

The mousse must match both the tire's inch size and dimension.
Example:

Wrong size = unnecessary hassle during assembly and poorer driving feel.

Mistake 3: You stress during assembly (and damage the mousse)

Forcing the mousse in with too much force, the wrong tool, or without patience is a recipe for:

  • Depressed parts

  • Uneven fit

  • Damage to the foam

Solution: Take it easy. Warm up the tire beforehand – it makes it a lot easier.

Mistake 4: You reuse old mousse “just one more time”

It may sound tempting. But mousse is a consumable item – and once it loses its elasticity or becomes dry and cracked, it's time to replace it.

An old mousse can:

  • Feeling “dead”

  • Release the grip

  • Roll unevenly

And that increases the risk of injury to both the bike and the rider.

Mistake 5: You forget to check the condition of your tires

Mousse + worn out tire = bad combo.
It doesn't matter how good the mousse is if the tire is dry, cracked or unevenly worn.

- Always check the tire before mounting.
- Replace both at the same time if necessary.
