How do you choose the right mousse?

Choosing the right mousse is one of the most important details when you want to ride safely, quickly and without a puncture. But what size should you get? What happens if the mousse is too big or small? And does your riding style really matter?

In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know – whether you're a beginner in the woods or a seasoned racing driver.

Hur väljer man rätt mousse?

What determines which mousse you should have?

Choosing the right mousse is about three things:

  1. Wheel size (inches) – The most common are 18", 19" or 21".

  2. Tire model and width – For example, 120/90-18 or 80/100-21.

  3. Your driving style – Hard, soft or mixed terrain?

Inch size – start here

Most mousse products are designed for specific thumb sizes. Here's a quick guide:

Wheel Common tire size Recommended mousse
Front wheel 80/100-21 Mousse 21"
Rear wheel 110/100-18 Mousse 18"
Rear wheel 120/90-18 Mousse 18" (wide)
Rear wheel 110/90-19 Mousse 19"

Tip: If you are unsure – take a look at the side of the tire, where the tire size is printed.

Your driving style matters

It's not just the numbers that matter. How you drive affects which mousse you should choose:

  • Hard enduro / rocky / competition: Choose a mousse that provides a harder tire pressure (less flex).

  • Soft enduro / technical / wet terrain: Choose a mousse with a softer feel – it simulates lower tire pressure and provides more grip.

  • All-round: Standard mousse from SpeedGrip is adapted for mixed driving and provides a perfect compromise.

What happens if you choose the wrong mousse?

  • Too much mousse = difficult to assemble, tires do not lower enough to the ground.

  • Too little mousse = too much play in the tire, risk of slipping and imbalance.

  • Wrong hardness = lost grip or too dull response.

That's why it's important to not only check the inch size – but also match the right mousse to your riding style and your tire.
